In packing for a hiking trip, I'm one of the few who can do without a hiking pole. I don't believe that it's a must-have after all. Come on, it's not like I'm a 70-year old grandpa! I can very well balance myself which I see as a part of the challenge. My reason for hiking is to experience the wilds, and how can I enjoy the wilds if I'm bringing the
comfort from civilization?!
If I am to get one, I won't spend a fortune for those expensive models. Besides, there are plenty of alternative poles to use. You could be resourceful yourself. The main purpose of poles is that it divides energy while it props you up. But it only adds up to your load and keeps your hand full. How would you look at your map and bring other packs if your hand is busy with flailing poles?
There are also times when poles may get in your way. It doesn't always work, not for all plain regions. And without a good technique and coordination, it may do harm than good.
Hiking poles are often overrated. I'd rather see to it that I have all the necessary package in my bag to survive my feat than to have a lousy hiking ornament.
